Buh-Bye Boring

Thirty paintings. Thirty Days.

California Impressions # 8.

You see this painting, the one down below? I started it earlier in the summer but found it so boring I walked away.

Just. Like. That. Said see ya and found my heart in other canvases.

Until today.

Boring work in progress

Work in progress

Today I walked into the studio and said, “C’mere darlin’. Mama’s gonna bling you up.”

And I pulled out the oils and went to town. YEE-HAW!!!

Buh-bye boring. Buh-bye.

Still a work in progress, paint has to dry before I do anything more. By the way, this is another big puppy, 40 x 40 inches. And I’m a tired girl from all that painting…

Till tomorrow–

This puppy is 40 x 40 inches. Not quite finished, I had to stop early and go to a wedding. Great time– love, friends, food . . . really, sometimes it’s good to get out of the studio.

But I’ll be back in it tomorrow, finishing this one and catching up with # 8.

Learning to loosen up, to let go of the original image. I’m thinking the next one wants a bigger canvas. Much bigger. And a mean air guitar and da Boss and some crazy ass studio energy because I do believe I’m ready to JUMP.

And you’ll just have to come back tomorrow to see how far.

Thirty Thirty # 4

California Impressions # 4

Sister Marjorie Ellen, an artist herself, had only one thing to say about yesterday’s painting: MORE YELLOW!

Since I always listen to my big sister (snark) but mostly because today’s painting was created after a full day of teaching and throwing something together with more yellow sounded heckuva lot better than anything my tired brain could conjure up, I decided to heed her advice.

And I’m glad I did.

For those of you who’ve just stumbled upon this series of posts, I’m taking part in Leslie Saeta’s Thirty/Thirty Challenge. Every day for thirty days I’ll be painting something and sharing it here. I decided I want to use this exercise as a way to find my voice with abstract landscapes. This week–maybe this month, I dunno–I’m painting variations of the same image, the one I created for day 1.

You can check it out here, along with the two paintings that followed before this one. Holy crappolony, what a difference a day (or three) makes!!!

As you can see, each day’s painting is looser than the day before. Intentionally so. My goal is to push this particular image until I can’t abstract it any more, until it tells me I’m done. Then I’ll move on to something else.

Would love to hear your thoughts on this. Let me know what you think in the comments below. And if you have any suggestions, throw ’em in. Who knows—I may say that’s just what I need.

Until tomorrow–
