Buh-bye Summer

Thirty paintings. Thirty days.

California Impressions # 23

Change up from the recent paintings. I needed a different palette. Needed to get away from the blue and yellow.

And being that today officially marks the beginning of autumn… I decided to skip ahead and go to winter.

This is the lake–around here the lake means Tahoe–this is THE LAKE in winter.  According to me.

Two Two

Thirty paintings. Thirty days.

California Impressions # 22

It’s gone for now. The winds changed and blew the smoke somewhere else. But not before it had it’s way with da muse.

When Smoke Gets In Your Eyes

Thirty paintings. Thirty days.

California Impressions # 21

But first….

This is what my piece of Northern California looked like today. That’s smoke folks, the stuff that chokes the lungs and brings tears to your eyes.

The photo was taken in the late afternoon when the sky would normally be blue.

The air quality in our neck o’the woods surpassed ‘unhealthy‘ today. Surpassed ‘very unhealthy‘ where it was yesterday. Bumped us right into the inner circle on the this-is-what-you’re-breathing map to ‘oh shit hazardous’.

I had grand plans when I went into the studio this morning. But the painting I was working on had other ideas. It morphed and morphed and morphed again from one thing to another, like the fire jumping the lines. I found myself circling back to my comfort colors of yellow and blue.

It’s not what I planned. And it’s not finished either. But I have to wait for the oils to dry before I can do anything else.

Be back tomorrow.

Fire Season

Thirty paintings. Thirty days.

California Impressions # 19.

It’s the end of summer, the height of fire season. Lately we’ve been waking up to choking smoke, the sky thick and yellow. The pattern shifts as the sun heats the day and the smoke goes somewhere else. But it comes back. Always comes back.

It seems like the whole damn state is on fire.
