30 Paintings 30 Days, day 23
What a difference a day makes. Yesterday I struggled, positively struggled to create ANYTHING remotely interesting on the ipad. Actually, I take that back. I made an awesome background, lots of wonderful scribbles and texture.
But you’d never know that because I covered it all up with, lets be honest here, a sucky painting.
I was out of my comfort zone, using digital brushes I hadn’t used before. It was an intentional discomfort, taken on because, well…why not learn something new?
Let’s face it, this whole 30 Paintings in 30 Days challenge is an intentional discomfort, one I’m uber glad I took on.
But still, making a sucky painting sucks.
That’s why I’m doing handsprings and black flips over what I made today.
This lovie flowed, simply flowed from my fingertips. Was I inspired? Yes. But mostly I was informed. I finally got around to downloading the Procreate Artist’s Handbook. Imagine that, an app that comes with directions!
Not only directions but a community of users that ROCK. Man, these guys share what they know on the forum. They also share custom digital brushes that they’ve made. Because you can make your own brushes in Procreate. Is that cool or what???
So after soaking up as much as I could in one sitting, I downloaded some brushes and began playing. I hadn’t planned on another nameless portrait but when da muse speaks. I listen. It’s either that or get whacked upside the head by the voice inside the head.
I’ll be back tomorrow with more Women in Red. As always, I’d love to hear what you have to say in the comments below.

Technical Info: Created on an iPad 2 using procreate and Nikko’s brushes (Rull). Thanks Nikko!
So lovely! And your stick-to-it-iveness is continually inspiring!
I aim to inspire, Bonnie 🙂
This is lovely. And isn’t it grand when you find a community that is so willing to share their advice and their mistakes etc?
She is a gem – the lovie you created. Pure gem.

I’m learning it’s all about community, Kelly, especially when I look at all the fantastic connections and people I’ve met online.
It’s inspiring to see/hear how you push thru the discomfort and emerge. Beautiful!
Thank you, Marcie. It’s all about growing as an artist, and ultimately, as a person.
Gorgeous! I’m resisting jumping in and exploring procreate this very second because my plate is already spilling over, but you’re certainly bumping it up on my list. What a wonderful challenge you’ve shown up for, and I’m delighted the support is showing up too.

I had it on the ipad for well over a year before I got around to exploring it, Deborah. I have to say it was a bit intimidating, especially when there are lighter, easier apps to play around in. But this one is the real deal and I’m glad I found the motivation to give it a chance.
another beauty! That’s pretty amazing that you can create and share your own brushes. keep the paintings coming.

I’ll keep them coming Sue. I’m toying around with continuing the daily practice, having come so far in it I don’t want to lose the momentum. On the other hand I’ve been neglecting lots of other things I could/should be doing.
This is great, Susan. I downloaded Procreate on one of your earlier posts and then completely forgot about it! I will have to poke around in it today and see what it is like. Thanks so much for your continued inspiration! 🙂

Ha, Amy–I downloaded procreate over a year ago and forgot about it too!. If I hadn’t been motivated to created a body of work for the painting challenge I may not have rediscovered it. I just couldn’t see myself going into the studio every day after work to paint. It’s winter, cold and dark and the studio needs a serious cleaning… There was something very tempting about making art while sitting on the sofa, feet propped up on the coffee table. 🙂
What a cool piece of art! I want to go look at all of the other works you completed for the other days so far! I had no idea you could create with such detail on an iPad and don’t have one, but now I want one. 😀
I luvvvvvvvvv my ipad, Karrlin. And now that I can consider it a serious art tool, I love it even more!
And if you’re serious about this, be aware that procreate is ipad exclusive, not available with other tablets.
wow! I didnt even know it was possible to ‘paint’ on the ipad!! This is such a beautiful, emotive piece of art xx
Thank you, Rachelle. I’m having way too much fun with this style of ‘painting’.
