“I am always doing that which I cannot do, in order that I may learn how to do it”
Pablo Picasso
When I decided to take part in Leslie Saeta’s 30 Paintings in 30 days I didn’t know much about digital painting. Actually, I knew nothing about it. So I decided to learn. I figured the 30 day challenge would be a good excuse for a regular digital practice. I also decided to blog about it because going public with my intention, putting it out there to the world meant that I would finish it.
Or at least that’s what I hoped it meant.
We’re now 17 days into this and ‘painting’ with a stylus is becoming more natural to me. I’m sticking with the Procreate app because I want to learn it. Know it inside out.
Tonight I realize how narrow my experience with it is when it dawned on me that I was using the same ‘brushes’ over and over. I found what worked for me and didn’t move off that path. So I made myself experiment and try a few I was unfamiliar with. You won’t notice by looking at the finished image but they’re in there adding to the overall effect.
Tomorrow I’ll experiment again. And every day through the remainder of this challenge. Because trying things I’m not comfortable with is the only way to become comfortable with them in the end.
What do you think?
It’s so wonderful the discipline a challenge can bring on — love this woman in red too – and I don’t notice in learning curve in her either. YAY you!

YAY both of us for sticking with this, Judy! I don’t know about you but I didn’t have a clue how much of a commitment this would be. Not that anyone is making me do anything, it’s how much I want to jump in and do it.
Who’da thunk I had so much self discipline…
Love what you’ve created here…and inspired by your determination to learn and master a new skill. I’m curious about Procreate….gonna check it out – :-)!
Well Marcie, I hope you like Procreate. Like anything else there’s a bit of a learning curve but it’s well worth the effort. 🙂
Lovely painting Susan! You are doing fabulous with Procreate. Which new brushes have you created? So far, I thought it looked like pastel marks. I would love to see process, did you ever figure out how to record the process and post it?

I’m thinking I’ll record the process after the 30 day thingie, Jaime. By then I’ll know more of what I’m doing as well as have the time to put together a video.
As far as the new (to me) brushes I used, ummm…I don’t quite remember. One was in the airbrush category and the other was one of the sketching pencils.
Sounds like you are certainly growing. I love that quote!

I think that quote sums up my attitude about life, Tiffany 🙂
Love that quote! I aspire to do the same- keep learning day by day. This is a great project you are working on and I’m am so enjoying your progress with it. Keep going!

Thanks Sue. There are days when it feels more like a chore than a project but mostly I look forward to the process. Overall I’m thrilled with the progress I’ve made and quite pleased as I see a new body of work emerge from what began as an exercise in learning and self-discipline.
